Volcanoes and The Canterbury Quakes

Out Topic study has centred on changes in landforms caused by natural causes and disasters. The children had a good idea of the different ways that land changes and these were recorded on a chart.

We decided that we wanted to find out more about volcanoes so we looked at youtube clips of volcanoes erupting, found out more information online and  completed worksheets. We also made our own volcano and watched it erupt with lava flowing down the valleys. (Our magic lava was made from vinegar, baking soda, red dye and a few drops of detergent!)

We also had a fantastic visit to the Nelson Museum to look at the exhibition on the Canterbury earthquakes. Nicki Green spoke to us first then we divided into 5 groups and parents and grandparents took each group and explained faultlines, liquifaction. what equipment we need to be ready for disasters, how the police and fire brigade helped to search broken down buildings and lots more.
